The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority Act, which was passed by the Parliament in December 1985, authorized the establishment of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) by the Government of India with the goal of fostering and promoting the export of specified goods. It was established to provide funding, recommendations, and details about upcoming product development. The Act described above includes a list of these prepared products, and exporters of such goods are required to register under the APEDA.

APEDA registration falls into two primary categories:

a. Merchant Exporter: A person or business that purchases goods from the market with the intention of exporting them.

b. Manufacturer Exporter: This classification comprises people or businesses that produce and export their own products.

In order to implement the accreditation of the Certification Bodies under the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) for organic exports, APEDA also serves as the secretariat of the National Accreditation Board (NAB). "Organic Products" for export are only need to be certified if they are Produced, Processed, and Packed in accordance with the guidelines outlined in the document "National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP)."
